The History of the Mastiff

The Mastiff, is one of the largest dog breeds.  His country of origin is England, where he is kept as guardian of vast estates. From this function derives the character of the Mastiff: he is attentive and observant; towards new situations hesitant and reserved. He sometimes rather takes a step back to get acquainted with new situations from a distance, which somebody unfamiliar with the breed may wrongly interpret as fear. This behavior, however, much rather originates in his defensive character, his high level of tolerance, his balanced nature and calmness as well as his great sensitivity. When observing something attentively, his forehead lies in wrinkles. Aggression is totally unknown to him. All this makes the Mastiff an ideal family companion, who can deal particularly well with children and older people.

The Mastiff loves his family and should therefore only be kept inside the house or apartment, never in a pin. He does not like noise or screaming, but is easy to train with love and affection. Please consider that responsible dog ownership requires an adequate amount of time every day, the devotion of which is a prerequisite when buying a dog. Provided the puppy buyer observes certain rules, he will live in great harmony with his 4-legged friend. We are glad to help you in this matter.

The Mastiff is a giant, massive dog, yet well proportioned. His chest is wide and deep, the body very muscular. His coat is short and comes in brindle, apricot and fawn. Muzzle, nose and ears should be black. Dogs are approx. 76 cm at the shoulder, bitches approx. 69 cm. Particularly the dog with his huge head at first sight commands respect. At second sight, however, when looking into his gentle eyes, his true character is revealed. He weighs approx. 80 to 90 kg, however, there have already been males with 120 kg. The average life span of a dog of this size is approx. 10 - 11 years.

The Mastiff, a breed which, owing to his great characteristics as family companion, deserves to become more widely spread and receive proper attention!
